There was very nice CW activity during ARRL contest this year (on all bands except 2m from US) and it is unfortunate I did not have a lot of free time for it.
I also “worked” JT65 logger eme (I thought: who is going to find out anyway??) and apart from constant chatter I also found JAMMING.... a lot of Jamming, even from its own creator!!?

I bought this powersupply SNT Emerson BML 231 204/5
It is standard set to 54Vdc output and contains a fiber optical interface.
No further adjustments at all.
Is there any-1 who has experience with this kind of powersupplies and configured it down to 48Vdc?

Hello to everyone that participated in the CQ WW VHF contest OR the
DUBUS 2M digital EME contest. I hope that everyone had a good contest
this time. It was just great that the two contests fell on the same
weekend. Although I operated the CQ WW VHF contest, there were loads of
operators that I was able to work that were clearly part of the DUBUS
contest. A little cross pollination there. I had thought that I might
be the only K5 multiplier available for the DUBUS contestants, but I
have found that K5GW and K5DNL were also available at various times.
So, hopefully everyone was able to get the K5 multiplier from one of us.
It would be great for these two contests to be on the same weekend every
year, but I have a bad feeling that the DUBUS contest is probably
scheduled on the weekend with the lowest degradation(nothing
unreasonable about that). Still, this coincidence sure made for a lot
of activity....and that is always good.
Results of K5QE in the CQ WW VHF contest are:
Total QSOs made = 700
Total QSO points = 829
Multipliers = 253
Total Score = 209,737
Contact breakdowns are:
6M 571 / 157
2M 129 / 96
That 2M score is pretty amazing. The grid multiplier count shows that
almost all of our 2M contacts were unique grids. Clearly, that comes
from working all the EME stations around the world. I am still
lamenting the loss of 5-6 hours on Saturday evening when we should have
been working EU stations like mad. AAAaaaRGH!!

I am close to finishing the build of a new 4 x 16 X-pol 144MHz EME array.
However I have encountered serious problems with the Prosistel PST61
elevation rotator. Despite considerable filtering, the Hall-effect rotation
encoder in the rotator motor casing seems to be somewhat sensitive to RF !
The problem manifests itself by confusion of the controller. When the
problem occurs, although the Prosistel 'D' controller may read 0 degrees the
antennas may still be at 25 or more degrees elevated. The internal counter
seems to have picked up more 'pulses' than the motor encoder should have
delivered and reads the wrong elevation. As the controller lower limit is
set at 0 degrees it is then impossible to lower the antennas without
completely 'recalibrating' the zero and maximum limits on the controller.
At first I suspected that spikes from the DC motor were getting into the
controller counter. I had issues with array balance exemplified by the time
taken to lower the array was several times that it took to raise it. I
changed the cable to the elevation motor from 1mm to 2mm as I thought that I
might be low on starting torque. This seemed to make the errors occur more
frequently! I then rebalanced the array completely. The time now taken to
elevate the array from 0 degrees to 45 degrees is close to the time it takes
to lower from 45 degrees to zero. When driven by the switches on the front
of the Prositel 'D' controller this only takes 10 seconds - exceptionally
fast. However I feel that the equal time indicates that the array is now
fairly close to balance. (It takes longer to lower from 90 degrees to 0,
around 30 secs, taking only 18 secs to elevate the full 90 degrees.)
I began to suspect RF getting into the counter electronics in the
controller. The problem would often 'appear' during an EME QSO as I tweaked
azimuth and elevation. I changed the cable to the rotator again. I replaced
the cable for the 4 encoder wires with 4 core 0.75mm industrial screened
control cable, joining the screen to pin 4 (gnd) on both connectors, whilst
leaving the motor connected by a separate unscreened cable with two 1.5mm
cores. Although this motor cable was thinner than the earlier cable(2mm) the
array certainly seemed to go up and down without issues. The loss of
calibration error problem kept reoccurring.
I then added ferrite filters and bypass capacitors on all leads going into
the controller. The problems still occurred.
I then did a series of experiments with the array beaming away from the
shack with the controller and ascertained:
Running the elevation up to 60 degrees and back down to zero with no RF - 10
X with no errors!
Running the elevation up to 60 degrees and back down to zero with 1KW
carrier - 10 X with occasional small errors
Running the elevation up to 60 degrees and back down to zero with 1KW SSB -
15 degrees error on 1st test!
This I repeated and concluded that the errors only occur when the elevation
drive is running in the presence of QRO RF.
I have fitted bypass capacitors on the motor connections to the rotator
motor - no change! I am now about to fit ferrite filters on all leads
entering the motor casing.
I am aware of at least one other Prosistel PST61 Elevation owner on 144MHz
EME with a similar problem. The PST61 azimuth rotator that I use has a
potentiometer for position sensing, which although it can go noisy etc, does
not suffer from RFI.
My question is quite simple: has anybody who has experienced similar
problems with a Prosistel elevation rotator or similar systems with
Hall-effect encoders (which are in fact complex ICs) managed to tame them?
I need a chip attenuator from 6 or 10 dB 20/30W.
